LAN airlines (ex-LAN Chile), is a Chilean ariline operating a group of societies in Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. It flies to Latin America, North America, the Carribean, Oceania and Europe. It is an active member of the Oneworld Alliance and has various agreements with other air companies, which allows it to cover a great variety of world destinations.
It was founded in 1929 by the Chilean government as Línea Aérea Nacional, which soon changed to LAN Chile. After several markets opened, which derived into founding of LAN Perú, LAN Ecuador and LAN Argentina, Lan Chile took the denomination LAN Airlines en 2005.
LAN divides the passenger business into three segments: long distance flights, Latin American routes (also called regional operations) and national flights within Chile, Perú, Argentina, Ecuador and Colombia. It is the major company with major participation in the national market in Chile and Peru. LAN Airlines controls 73% of the domestic flights in Chile, 66% in Peru and 35% in Argentina.
